Work-based learning
Work-based learning helps learners of all ages prepare for the workplace, develop workplace skills, enhance their existing skills, and find a career pathway that suits them.
Learners can:
- explore different jobs and industries
- get hands-on experience in their chosen field
- get industry-recognised qualifications
SQA qualifications provide three types of work-based learning, which offer different experiences and opportunities.
Work preparation learning - learn about work
SQA Awards and Skills for Work qualifications will give you workplace skills and show you’re ready for work. Courses might include experience in a real workplace or a simulated workplace. These qualifications are developed with industry.
Work-related learning - develop skills for employment
HNCs and HNDs, PDAs, National Certificates and NPAs can develop the skills you need for a specific job – or improve skills you already have. Most courses are likely to have some learning in a workplace and might also include assessment in a workplace. These qualifications are developed with industry and based on industry standards.
Workplace learning - on the job learning and assessment
SVQs and apprenticeships allow you to learn and get qualifications while you work. Learning and assessment take place mainly in the workplace, and assessment is by completing job-related tasks. These qualifications and apprenticeships are developed by and for employers.
Skills
Work-based learning develops many skills, including professional and technical skills, and transferable skills.
