SVQ Leather, Sewn Products or Textiles Manufacturing SCQF level 5
The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Leather, Sewn Products or Textiles Manufacturing at SCQF level 5 allows candidates to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.
This qualification covers areas such as health, safety and security at work and quality assurance. Learners will choose from specialised pathways in leather goods production, sewn products or manufacturing textile products. The qualification offers vital training for the textiles, leather and cut, make and trim industries in Scotland.
The SVQ provides three pathways: leather, sewn products or textiles.
Leather pathway
This pathway covers a variety of job occupations, such as roles in a beamhouse, post-tanning, leather finishing and leather quality control.
Sewn products pathway
This pathway covers a variety of job occupations in the Scottish apparel cut, make and trim (CMT) sector and a range of other industries, eg car interiors manufacturing, personal protective equipment, soft furnishings, hand stitched and finished products, etc. Job roles include cutters, machinists, renovators, repairers, assemblers, pressers.
Textiles pathway
This pathway is suitable for roles in weaving, finishing, linking and knitting and covers occupations such as textile operative, quality control inspector, product tester, hand weaver and Harris Tweed weaver.
This qualification has been designed in partnership with UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT).
SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards (NOS). SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that NOS are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.

Why deliver this qualification
Learners will gain an internationally recognised qualification that guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
Assessment is carried out in the workplace. This minimises any time learners need to be away from their work.
Candidates can progress to a range of qualifications including related SVQs at SCQF levels 6 or 7 or an HNC/D in Fashion Design and Manufacture.
Who does this qualification suit
This SVQ is suitable for:
- learners who may have just left school
- individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Candidates should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow them to gather the required evidence.
No prior qualifications are required to undertake this qualification, although experience in/knowledge of the subject would be an advantage.
Progression
The level 5 award could provide progression to:
- a relevant SVQ at SCQF level 6 or 7
- an HNC/HND in Fashion Design and Manufacture or a related area
- employment in the leather goods production, textiles manufacturing or cut, trim and make sectors
Approval
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority are required to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.

SVQ in Leather, Sewn Products or Textiles Manufacturing at SCQF level 5 consists of two mandatory units and four optional units.

Core Skills signposting
Core Skill mappings are carried out by the SSC responsible for the development of an SVQ. It is a requirement of SQA Accreditation that every SVQ submission includes information on where possible opportunities for candidates to develop Core Skills exist across the mandatory units.
Centres should note that mappings are not audited or validated against the Core Skills framework/units so are not accepted by SQA awarding body as evidence towards achievement of the Core Skills units.
