Diploma Sewerage and Drainage Operations SCQF level 5
The Diploma in Sewerage and Drainage Operations at SCQF level 5 provides learners with a qualification that will demonstrate their aptitude in this area. This Diploma will develop the learner's confidence and awareness of the skills that they have acquired which they can use for employment and/or further study.
The mandatory part of the Diploma covers areas such as health and safety in the water industry, customer service and essential knowledge for sewerage and drainage.
In addition, candidates complete one of four specialist pathways:
- Sewerage Investigative CCTV Operative
- Water Jetting Operative
- Sewerage Repair and Maintenance Operative
- Sewage Pumping Station Repair and Maintenance Operative

Why deliver this qualification
The Diploma in Sewerage and Drainage Operations at SCQF level 5 has been developed by Energy & Utility Skills.
The units that make up this competence-based qualification combine assessment criteria covering skills/performance and knowledge requirements.
The Diploma can be offered within a workplace environment. The evidence demonstrating achievement of the qualification can be assessed within a workplace environment or, where simulation is used, within a realistic working environment.
Who does this qualification suit
This qualification is suitable for:
- individuals interested in the water sector
- learners who may have just left school
- mature candidates who may have been out of education for some time
- individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
- employers who wish their employees to obtain short, continuing professional development courses
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Progression
The Diploma in Water Distribution Control at SCQF level 5 could provide progression to other water-related qualifications at SCQF levels 5 and 6. Successful completion of the qualification could also open up more employment opportunities and career prospects in the sector.
Approval
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority are required to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.
How to assess
The Diploma is designed to be assessed in the workplace, or in conditions similar to the workplace. Assessment evidence will primarily be generated via workplace evidence. Each unit provides assessment evidence requirements and guidance on instruments of assessment.

The Diploma in Sewerage and Drainage Operations at SCQF level 5 consists of consists of three mandatory units. In addition to the mandatory units, candidates must complete one of four specialist pathways. Each pathway has two units.
The qualification also includes additional units. Candidates may complete any of the additional units. However, they do not contribute to the achievement of the full Diploma.
