NPA Maritime Studies SCQF level 5

The NPA in Maritime Studies at SCQF level 5 introduces learners to skills and knowledge that are important in the Maritime sector.

This National Progression Award develops:

  • knowledge and understanding of the maritime sector
  • oral, written and evaluation abilities
  • resource management and organisational skills
  • problem solving and planning abilities
  • communication skills

It covers areas such as:

Maritime Sector Overview, Vessel Construction and Stability, Basic Navigational Watchkeeping, Vessel Ropework, Anchoring and Mooring Activities, Securing a Vessel for Passage, Basic Vessel Engineering Systems and Electrical Plant Safety and Maintenance.

This qualification is available through schools, colleges and training providers.

Group Award code:  GP82 45 (13/17 SCQF credit points)

This National Progression Award consists of 4 mandatory units (11 SCQF credit points) and an optional unit which must also be taken from a choice of 3 units (between 2 and 6 SCQF credit points).

Mandatory units include: Maritime Sector Overview, Vessel Construction and Stability, Basic Navigational Watchkeeping and Vessel Ropework, Anchoring, and Mooring Activities.

Assessment will be a combination of practical and knowledge assessments under closed- and open-book assessment conditions. See the assessment and evidence requirements for each unit.

The NPA is suitable for:

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre. However, it would be beneficial for learners entering the level 5 award to have gained work experience in a maritime sector and to have considered the challenges and opportunities of work afloat. This should include the physical demands of jobs at sea. Anyone who works at sea must, by law, meet minimum health requirements and hold the medical certificate, ENG1 or ML5 (meeting standards set by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency).

Employment and progression

The level 5 award could provide progression to:

  • SCQF level 6 to level 8
  • an HNC/HND in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science or a related area
  • employment in the Maritime sector such as working in Aquaculture, Sea Fishing, Harbours, Ports and Marinas
