Chainsaw Felling Large Trees Award SCQF level 6

The Award in Chainsaw Felling Large Trees at SCQF level 6 will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as how to safely operate and maintain a chainsaw, how to use it to clear lying timber and how to fell large trees (larger than 380mm in diameter).

Achievement of this Award is nationally recognised.

This qualification covers areas such as planning for, preparing for and felling large trees (larger than 380mm in diameter). It also covers inspection, routine and specific maintenance of chainsaws as well as planning, preparing for and safely carrying out timber clearing.

This qualification is available through training providers and colleges.

This qualification has been withdrawn and finished on 31/07/2024

Why deliver this qualification

Centres have the flexibility to choose the delivery method which best suits their circumstances and their learners.

The Award can be used to offer a progression pathway to other qualifications (see Progression).

The Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Use can lead to membership of the Chainsaw Operators Registration Scheme (CORS) and has been fully mapped against the requirements of the relevant National Occupational Standards (NOS).

The Chainsaw Felling Large Trees Award at SCQF level 6 is suitable for:

  • employees studying as part of a continuing professional development programme
  • people in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • those who wish to start their own business

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre.

No specific knowledge is required to undertake this Award.

Progression

The Award may provide progression to a range of related Chainsaw and Tree Clearing qualifications including:

  • Award in Clear Individual Windblown Trees at SCQF Level 6
  • Award in Clear Multiple Windblown Trees at SCQF Level 6

The qualifications have been designed to allow learners to build up their knowledge and skills by adding additional units. For example, learners who have already completed the Chainsaw Felling Small Trees Award only need to complete Unit Fell Large Trees to achieve this Award. There are a number of different combinations to suit a range of tree-felling and related tasks.

Approval

Centres interested in offering this qualification are required to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide. The specific delivery requirements are set out in the Group Award Specification (Arrangements Document).

How to assess

Each individual unit specification gives detailed information on the evidence requirements and approaches to assessment for each unit.

Awards are not graded.

Each unit is assessed separately. Each unit requires that the candidate produces practical evidence. Evidence will be based on the candidate's practical experience.

Assessment can take place at appropriate points as candidates progress through the tasks within the units. Evidence of assessment can be presented in a format which best suits the individual candidates and the activities being undertaken.

Evidence can include written records, e-mails, assessor records, diaries, video recordings of interviews or photographs.
