NPA Oral Health Care: an Introduction SCQF level 5
National Progression Awards (NPAs) assess a defined set of skills and knowledge in specialist vocational areas, linked to National Occupational Standards. The NPA in Oral Health Care: an Introduction at SCQF level 5 provides an introduction to the underpinning knowledge, understanding, and skills that are required for accessing further training to become a registered dental nurse.
This NPA introduces the learner to health and safety risk assessment, infection prevention and control, and basic dental anatomy. Their practical and transferable skills will be developed, such as their oral, written, and evaluation abilities, as well as problem solving and planning, team working, and communication skills.
The qualification is available through colleges and training providers.

How to assess
Assessment of this award will be a combination of practical and knowledge assessments under closed- and open-book assessment conditions. Centres should refer to the assessment and evidence requirements for each unit.

Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre. However, it would be beneficial if learners entering the level 5 award have achieved units in Science, English, and Maths at SCQF level 4.
Employment and progression
The level 5 award could provide progression to:
- further study, such as the NPA in Oral Health Care at SCQF level 6
- employment in the healthcare sector, perhaps as a local decontamination unit operator or healthcare assistant
