The certificate in Highways Maintenance — Excavation and Reinstatement Operations at Level 2 will develop knowledge and skills in:

  • operating powered tools and machinery
  • excavating holes and trenches
  • searching for underground services
  • reinstating excavation and highway surfaces

This qualification is available through training providers and colleges in England and Wales.

Rationale and purpose of this qualification

This qualification is aimed at those who have no prior experience of highways maintenance excavation and reinstatement operations. It is also suitable for those who are in work and are looking to gain additional learning and experience.

Its primary purpose is to develop the learner's occupational competence so that they can gain employment or work towards another qualification (see Progression).

This Certificate delivers the underpinning knowledge needed to meet the nationally recognised standard for the role of highways maintenance operative and so provides a sound basis for working in the industry.

Objectives

The qualification is designed to lead the learner to one or more of the following objectives:

  • preparing learners for employment
  • preparing learners to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding

What does this qualification cover?

As this is a knowledge-based qualification, learners will be acquiring the knowledge and skills required in a learning environment.

To achieve the whole qualification, learners need a minimum of 28 credits. They must complete eight mandatory units from the qualification structure.

There are no specific skills, knowledge understanding or any other qualifications that must be achieved in order to start this qualification, however learners must have the potential and opportunity to gain this qualification successfully.

This qualification is mainly taken by individuals employed (or seeking employment) as highways maintenance operatives.

Apprenticeships 

This qualification is a mandatory component in the Level 2 Construction Civil Engineering Apprenticeship.

How to assess

Ongoing course assessment will apply. Each unit specification gives detailed information on the evidence requirements/assessment criteria and approaches to assessment for the unit. A training and assessment programme is available for this unit from the SQA secure website.

This qualification is assessed by completing various tasks to evidence what learners have learned. This can be carried out through practical assessment, knowledge-based questioning or online assessment. The assessor can then confirm that they have met the requirements of the qualification and that they have the necessary underpinning knowledge and skills to progress on to a Level 2 Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services — Highway Maintenance apprenticeship.

The assessment process will ensure that the learner can complete the tasks that they have been directed to undertake and that they can interpret the instructions correctly. They will demonstrate that they can select the appropriate resources for the task and can complete tasks within the given timescales and specifications.
