SVQ Healthcare Support (Non-clinical) SCQF level 7
The Scottish Vocational Qualification Healthcare Support (Non-clinical) at SCQF level 7 allows learners to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.
This qualification covers areas such as promoting effective communication in a healthcare environment; maintaining health, safety and security practices within a health setting; and developing your practice through reflection and learning. It also covers monitoring and solving customer service problems; planning and managing own workload; planning and organising meetings; helping individuals address problems affecting their performance; using information to take effective decisions; allocating work to team members; giving presentations to groups; and assisting others to plan presentations to enable learning.
This qualification has been designed in partnership with the Skills for Health Sector Skills Council to ensure relevance to the sector.
SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that National Occupational Standards (NOS) are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.

Why deliver this qualification
The SVQ level 3 Healthcare Support (Non-clinical) at SCQF level 7 is a re-accredited qualification.
Successful candidates will gain an internationally-recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
Assessment is carried out in the workplace, which minimises any time learners would need to be away from their work.
The progression route for each candidate will depend on their job role and level of responsibility.
The SVQ can be offered in any of the following modes:
- full-time
- part-time (eg day-release)
- open and distance learning
The achievement of other qualifications such as the Scottish Modern Apprenticeship in Healthcare Support at SCQF Level 7 can contribute towards the successful completion of this award.
Who does this qualification suit
This SVQ is suitable for:
- learners who have just left school
- individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
- employees who wish to obtain short, continuing professional development courses
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Candidates should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow them to gather the required evidence.
No prior qualifications are required to undertake this qualification, although experience in/knowledge of subject would be an advantage.
Progression
The level 3 award could provide progression to:
- employment in the Healthcare sector, perhaps as a Healthcare Support Worker
- related PDAs in the Healthcare sector
Approval
Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact the Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements as outlined in the guide to approval.

Core Skills signposting
Core Skill mappings are carried out by the SSC responsible for the development of an SVQ. It is a requirement of SQA Accreditation that every SVQ submission includes information on where possible opportunities for candidates to develop Core Skills exist across the mandatory units.
Centres should note that mappings are not audited or validated against the Core Skills framework/units so are not accepted by SQA awarding body as evidence towards achievement of the Core Skills units.
