SVQ Management SCQF level 9
The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Management at SCQF level 9 allows candidates to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise. It has been developed to support those working as middle managers.
This qualification is jointly awarded with the Chartered Institute of Management (CMI). Candidates who are registered for SVQ in Management at SCQF level 9 (GM27 24) are able to take advantage of 12 months free studying membership of CMI.
This qualification is available through employers, colleges and training providers.

Why deliver this qualification
SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that National Occupational Standards are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.
Learners will gain an internationally recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
Assessment is carried out in the workplace which minimises any time learners need to be away from their work.
Candidates can progress to a range of qualifications including SVQ in Management at SCQF level 11.
Who does this qualification suit
This SVQ is suitable for:
- individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Candidates should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow then to gather the required evidence.
No prior qualifications or knowledge are required to undertake this qualification.
Progression
This SVQ in Management at SCQF level 9 could provide progression to:
- a degree in Management or Business Enterprise or a related area
- a range of PDAs in Management from SCQF level 10 and above
- an SVQ in Management at SCQF level 11
- employment across many sectors in senior management role
Approval
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority require to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.

Qualification Structure
The SVQ in Management at SCQF level 9 consists of four mandatory Units and four optional Units.

Core Skills signposting
Core Skill mappings are carried out by the SSC responsible for the development of an SVQ. It is a requirement of SQA Accreditation that every SVQ submission includes information on where possible opportunities for candidates to develop Core Skills exist across the mandatory units.
Centres should note that mappings are not audited or validated against the Core Skills framework/units so are not accepted by SQA awarding body as evidence towards achievement of the Core Skills units.

SVQ in Management at SCQF level 9 and SSSC registration
The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) has confirmed that the SVQ in Management at SCQF level 9 (GM27 24) has been accepted for registration purposes with a compensatory measure. The compensatory measure requires candidates wishing to use the SVQ Management at SCQF level 9 (GM27 24) for registration purposes to provide evidence of achievement of the following 2 units taken from the SVQ Care Services Leadership and Management at SCQF level 10 (GJ9V 24):
- H7LG 04 - Manage and Develop Yourself and Your Workforce within Care Services at SCQF 10
- H7LH 04- Lead and Manage Practice that Promotes the Safeguarding of Individuals at SCQF 10
It should be noted that the registration does not cover Day Care of Children Services.
