SVQ Controlling Lifting Operations: Planning Lifts (Construction) SCQF level 9
The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in SVQ in Controlling Lifting Operations: Planning Lifts (Construction) at SCQF level 9 allows candidates to demonstrate their competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.
This qualification covers areas such as: Develop and maintain good working relationships; Plan lifting activities; Plan and establish safety, health, welfare and environmental systems for lifting operations; Plan work activities and resources to meet project requirements; Evaluate and confirm work methods; Plan the preparation of the site for the project; and Identify, allocate and plan the deployment and use of plant, equipment or machinery.
SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that National Occupational Standards (NOS) are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.

Why deliver this qualification
Learners will gain an internationally-recognised qualification that guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
Assessment is carried out in the workplace. This minimises any time learners need to be away from their work.
Candidates can progress to a range of qualifications including Occupational Work Supervision or HNC in Contracting Management.
The SVQ can be offered in any of the following modes:
- full-time
- part-time (for example, day-release)
- open and distance learning
The achievement of other qualifications such as SVQ Controlling Lifting Operations: Slinger/Signaller (Construction) SCQF level 5, and SVQ Controlling Lifting Operations: Supervising Lifts (Construction) SCQF level 7, can contribute towards the successful completion of this award.
Who does this qualification suit
This SVQ is suitable for:
- learners who have just left school
- individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Candidates should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow then to gather the required evidence.
Progression
The level 9 award could provide progression to:
- an HNC in Contracting Management or a related area
- an SVQ in Occupational Work Supervision at SCQF level 6
- a PDA at SCQF level 7 and progress into the Crafts
- degree level study at a higher education institution
- employment in the Construction sector, perhaps as a Supervisor/Manager
Approval
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority require to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.
