SVQ Downstream Field Operations SCQF level 6
The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Downstream Field Operations has been developed by Cogent and is intended for people in the downstream petroleum industry, who may be working as downstream field production operators or downstream control room operators.
They will require skills and knowledge in contributing to the safety of the processing environment; responding to incidents, hazardous conditions and emergencies; working effectively in a team; starting up equipment; monitoring and maintaining process and equipment conditions; handling non-routine information on plant condition; shutting down equipment; preparing for/facilitating the maintenance of plant and equipment; carrying out control operations; providing samples for analysis; and analysing samples and providing instructions. Field production operators will also require skills and knowledge in carrying out maintenance within an agreed scope of authority.
This qualification is available through sector-specific employers.

Why deliver this qualification
The SVQ in Downstream Field Operations has been developed by Cogent who are the Sector Skills Council for Science based industries.
This SVQ opens up the possibility of continued study for learners and can be offered at any time as they do not need to follow the academic session. The qualification gives learners the opportunity to improve their skills and career prospects.
This SVQ incorporates the national occupational standards and qualification structure identified by the standards setting body for the sector and is accredited by the SQA as a Scottish Vocational Qualification. This qualification is awarded, and certificate issued, by SQA.
Who does this qualification suit
This qualifications is suitable for people in the downstream petroleum industry working as downstream field production operators or downstream control room operators who would benefit from well structured opportunities to improve their skills and career prospects within the oil industry.
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre. As this is a work-based qualification, learners should be in job roles which would enable them to provide the required evidence.
Progression
The SVQ in Downstream Field Operations could open up more employment opportunities and career prospects.
Approval
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.
How to assess
This SVQ is designed to be assessed in the workplace, or in the conditions of the workplace.
Assessment of this qualification will be through a series of theoretical and practical assessments or tasks. Some assessments will be carried out under supervised open-book conditions, others under supervised closed-book conditions.
