National Literacy and National Numeracy Units
National literacy and numeracy units have a focus on developing literacy and numeracy skills. They are taught as part of National 3 and National 4 courses in English and Gàidhlig (literacy units), and Mathematics and Applications of Mathematics (numeracy units).
National Literacy Units
- Develop the four skills of reading, writing, listening and talking.
- Available at National 3, National 4 and National 5 levels.
- Are part of National 3 and National 4 English and Gàidhlig courses.
- Are available as freestanding units for those who require certification of their literacy skills - including adult learners.
- Contain the Core Skill of Communication.
On achieving a National Literacy Unit, the Core Skill of Communication will automatically be on the candidate's Scottish Qualifications Certificate (SQC).
National Numeracy Units
- Develop skills in number processes and information handling.
- Available at National 3, National 4 and National 5 levels.
- Are part of the National 4 Mathematics and Applications of Mathematics courses.
- Are available as freestanding units for those who require certification of their numeracy skills - including adult learners.
- Contain the Core Skill of Numeracy.
On achieving a National Numeracy Unit, the Core Skill of Numeracy will automatically be on the candidate's Scottish Qualifications Certificate (SQC).
Support for disabled learners and learners with additional support needs
When completing National Literacy Units, a number of supportive practices are allowed for disabled learners and learners with identified additional support needs (ASN).
