NPA Computer Networks SCQF level 5

This National Progression Award (NPA) introduces learners to techniques that are important in the computing sector. It develops knowledge and understanding of networking and installing and maintaining computer hardware and software.

The National Progression Award (NPA) in Computer Networks is available at SCQF level 5. This award is a revision of the original NPA Computer Networks and Systems (G9J8 45), which was first introduced in 2009.

The award is composed of units which form part of the National Certificate awards in Computing with Digital Media. Candidates for the NC Computing with Digital Media awards have the opportunity to be certificated for this NPA depending on their choice of units within their programmes. Conversely, candidates who achieve an NPA award will have SCQF credits that can count towards the NC Computing with Digital Media awards.

It covers areas such as: setting up an operational computer system with a range of computer hardware; maintaining and upgrading an existing computer system; and planning and assembling a computer network using hardware and software components.

This qualification is available through schools, colleges and training providers.

NPAs can be taught as a full-time course over one year or as a part-time course over two years.

Why study this qualification

The NPA in Computer Networks is designed for a wide range of learners, including:

  • school leavers
  •  adults returning to education
  •  individuals who are currently in employment and wish to obtain a formal qualification
  • those who are looking to access HN programmes

The qualification will introduce you to the fundamental knowledge and skills required to make effective use of computer hardware, software and networks. The units that make up this National Progression Award are also part of the National Certificate (NC) in Computing with Digital Media suite of awards at SCQF level 5.

During the award, you will learn how to:

  • identify the basic function of hardware components and their safe operation
  • set up an operational computer system with a range of computer hardware
  • maintain and upgrade an existing computer system

You will also develop important aspects of the Core Skills of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Problem Solving.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre. However, if you are thinking of entering this award, it is recommended that you should have some basic computing knowledge and skills

Employment and progression

You could use this level 5 award to progress to:

  • NC Computing with Digital Media at SCQF Level 6
  • NC Computing: Technical Support at SCQF Level 6
  • an HNC/HND in Networking or a related area
  • other computing-related studies
