HNC Contracting Management

The HNC Contracting Management will provide candidates with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required for employment in the contracting sector of the construction industry.

It will give candidates skills including managing a project, and competence in the legal procedures (applied universally in the construction industry) with which organisations must comply. It will also enable them to understand the cash-flow implications when negotiating contacts, and to be aware that costs escalate but revenue is received at pre-determined times. It also covers corporate strategy, introducing candidates to aspects of matching an organisation to its environment and long-term planning techniques.

Knowledge and skills in planning, developing and evaluating, and study and research are also developed.

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry will be at the discretion of the centre. Examples of appropriate entry requirements include:

  • any relevant National Certificate Group Award at Intermediate 2 or Higher
  • any two Highers, together with three Standard Grade passes at 3 or above
  • an SVQ 3 in a relevant area
  • different combinations of relevant and equivalent qualifications from other awarding bodies

Employment and progression

The HNC Contracting Management award is particularly suited to you if you are looking to be employed as a Contracts Manager, Facilities Manager, Project Manager, or Estimator.

On completion of the HNC you might progress to the Chartered Management Institute's Executive Diploma in Management offered by the Carnegie College. With the Executive Diploma you could apply for entry to the final year of a Masters degree offered by Edinburgh Napier University.

The HNC also prepares you for progression to degree programmes in Management, Facilities Management and Project Management. You should check with the university in question, as Unit credits that count towards entry requirements can vary.

If you gain the HNC Contracting Management followed by post-graduate level study, you may apply for membership of the Chartered Management Institute. You may then elect to progress onto an MSc in Facilities Management to gain membership of the British Institute of Facilities Management.
