A Cumbernauld-based training provider that delivers Modern Apprenticeships and vocational qualifications in the construction industry gave the new interim Chief Executive of the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) an insight into the issues and opportunities facing the sector at a recent visit.

John Booth, Interim Chief Executive of SQA met with David McAleese, Director at Competence Matters Ltd. to discuss a number of topics including the SQA’s replacement by Qualifications Scotland, and the recent acquisition of Competence Matters Ltd by UK-wide, Kingdom Group to become part of Kingdom Academy, which offer apprenticeship and training qualifications in a range of industries including housing.

While on-site, John spent time with Leo Harkin, who talked about his modern apprenticeship in the construction technical pathway. Leo said; ‘I’m in the first year of my two-year programme. I’m working towards an SVQ in Built Environment Design, and an HNC in Civil Engineering. After that, I’m hoping to go on to study for a Graduate Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering.’

John said 'There’s great work being done by employers and training providers across the country, delivering SQA vocational qualifications and facilitating pathways between schools, colleges and employers.

‘David and the team at Competence Matters Ltd – like training providers all across Scotland – are vital. They support young people setting out on their career paths and give those already in work the opportunity to develop their skills and enhance their prospects. Hearing Leo’s story reaffirmed my view that SQA – and in turn Qualifications Scotland – must continue to help young people connect with the progression pathways they need to achieve the success that is right for them.’

David McAleese, Director at Competence Matters Ltd. said; ‘I am passionate about reaching out to schools across our communities and giving young people the chance to see the vast amount of career opportunities that are out there. The construction industry is a hugely varied sector, and by delivering highly regarded SQA qualifications that are trusted by the sector, we’re giving learners like Leo the best start to their careers.

‘It was great to welcome John to Competence Matters Ltd, and I hope the insights he gained and the feedback he heard have assured him that together training providers and SQA can play a vital role in getting young people qualified and giving them the opportunities and confidence they need to succeed.’

‘Becoming part of The Kingdom Group takes us to the next chapter and their vision, values and expertise align with our own. The opportunities brought from this partnership can benefit everyone in our community.’
