Action to support history teachers

Monday 9 December 2024

SQA, the Scottish Government and the Scottish Association of Teachers of History (SATH) met today to discuss the results of a survey of history teachers.

They have agreed to work together to consider the survey feedback and what more can be done to support teachers delivering Higher History this year and in the future. The SQA also reiterated its commitment to improving communication and engagement with teachers.

Donna Stewart, Director of Qualifications at SQA, said:

“The Chief Examiner has made clear that she accepts the conclusions of the evidence-led Higher History Review, and an independent exams expert has verified the findings. We are committed to listening and responding to feedback from teachers and are grateful to SATH for gathering views. We are all agreed that it is important to look forward and have agreed to work together to respond positively to the survey and to continue dialogue with the profession about what extra support – over and above the existing course report and Understanding Standards events – would be helpful.”

Kirsty MacDonald, SATH President, said:

“SATH has gathered the views of Scottish history teachers on this issue in order to ensure that everyone in the teaching community can have their voices heard.  We are pleased that SQA and the Scottish Government are keen to action many of the points raised in the survey and work with the SATH committee towards positive outcomes  The survey results have revealed the extent of the impact of the drop in results in 2024 on teachers and learners, and that significant action is needed to restore confidence in the SQA. Many teachers responding to the survey highlighted the need for open communication and a more consultative approach from the SQA, and we welcome the opportunity to work together to achieve this."
