What is a Customised Award?
A customised award is a unique qualification designed by an organisation to meet the identified needs of their students or employees and benefits from being quality assured and certificated by SQA. It can help businesses to:
- recognise skills and achievements
- demonstrate compliance with standards and regulations
- create progression routes
- stand out from the competition
Edubex Learning decided to partner with SQA because of their high standards, robust quality assurance and international credibility. Rinu Sara Mathew, Chief Learning Officer at Edubex Learning, said ‘The flexibility of SQA's Customised Awards enables us to create industry-specific courses, boosting student employability and professional relevance. Additionally, SQA’s alignment with the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) supports credit transfers, making it easier for students to transition to higher education, like MBA top-up programmes.’
The organisation found the centre approval process with SQA to be supportive and efficient, from initial curriculum development and vetting to the final stages of uploading data and external verification. Rinu added ‘SQA consistently demonstrated a proactive approach, attending meetings in person and responding to our queries promptly and efficiently. We appreciate the support received from SQA, noting its responsiveness and commitment to quality assurance. The guidance provided during the onboarding process and ongoing access to resources has been valuable in delivering high-quality programmes. This collaborative relationship enhances Edubex Learning’s ability to meet educational standards and support student success.’
Margaret Curran, International Regional Manager at SQA, has been working closely with Edubex through the development of the Customised Award; ‘The Extended Diploma in International Business Management at SCQF level 11 with 120 credit points provides credit transfer options onto MBA programmes and enhances career development opportunities for students choosing this flexibly delivered qualification. Students, universities and employers alike can be reassured by the international recognition provided through the SCQF and SQA quality standards.’
Edubex Learning has ambitious plans which include increasing enrolment in the Customised Award programme, expanding its course offerings, and establishing partnerships to attract more students, with the ultimate aim of potentially developing new pathways for credit transfers.
Joseph Lesego, a recent graduate of the Customised Award in International Business Management at SCQF level 11 offered by Edubex Learning shared his thoughts on the course.
The course was appealing to Joseph due to its clear structure and depth of the curriculum which fit with his professional schedule: ‘The content of the course is challenging and includes elements of international business. However, one of the best things about this programme was how it struck a balance between theoretical knowledge and its application in real-world scenarios.’
Joseph found the practically of the course attractive, telling us ‘I found the assignments and case studies to be quite practical for my work-related experiences, enabling me to apply what I was learning to real-world business situations which are highly aligned with how I see myself in the years after this course.’
The learning environment created by Edubex Learning also enabled Joseph to manage his professional obligations which was a priority for him; ‘The assistance provided by Edubex Learning support team was very good. Both the mentors and instructors, apart from being well-versed, have a friendly approach and clear all the doubts whenever you wish to ask them anything. I could also manage my professional commitments along with my studies, which was very important for me to do.’
Joseph has plans to continue his studies in this field and will progress onto a master’s degree in Business Administration.
‘I am convinced that the skills and experience I have gained through this programme will be beneficial to finding new opportunities in the international business sector, as well as taking my studies further. Overall, I would recommend this programme to others who are seeking career advancement opportunities in global business.’
Margaret Hutchinson, International Articulation Manager at SQA commented on the innovative pathway; ‘The SCQF credit value and level of this Customised Award provides further opportunities for Edubex students to progress to post graduate studies at one of our partner universities. SQA partners with global universities in several countries to offer our students further study options should they wish to consider that following completion of their SQA qualification.’
