ADVEX Management School became an SQA approved centre in October 2024. We explore the onboarding process from start to finish with their Executive Director, Dr Alex Bordin, and find out about their experience of partnering with SQA.

When did you first enquire about becoming an SQA centre?

We first enquired about becoming an SQA centre in early 2024. At that time, we were looking for internationally recognised qualifications that would align with Thailand's National Qualifications Framework and Thai educational policy direction, which focus more on professional and workforce development and provide clear progression pathways for our students.

How did you find out about SQA?

We learned about SQA through various educational forums, organisations with experience of working with SQA, the website, and discussions with academic professionals involved in international education standards. We were impressed by SQA's reputation for high-quality, globally recognised qualifications that align with vocational and professional development education, which are key areas for us.

Why did you want to become an SQA centre? Was the Diploma to Degree pathway attractive to you?

Becoming an SQA centre fits perfectly with our mission to provide our students with qualifications that are internationally recognised and valued in both academic and professional spheres. The Diploma to Degree pathway was particularly attractive, as it offered our students a seamless transition to higher education or the workforce, which is crucial in a competitive global environment. SQA’s commitment to developing professional skills aligns with our focus on career readiness and lifelong learning.

Describe the steps you went through to become an SQA centre.

After learning about SQA, we began by thoroughly researching the qualifications they offered and the approval process. We then communicated directly with our SQA representative who guided us through the requirements. This included ensuring that our teaching staff and facilities met the rigorous standards required for SQA qualifications. We worked closely with SQA in submitting our application, participating in the virtual approval visit, and aligning our quality assurance systems with SQA's expectations.

How did you find the process to become an SQA centre?

The process was detailed and thorough, ensuring that we met the high standards expected of an SQA centre. Aligning with SQA's requirements required commitment and collaboration from our entire team, but we appreciated that this ensured the integrity and quality of the qualifications we would offer. We have learned a lot from the process of understanding the quality standard and how to ensure the delivery of expected outcomes.

Were you happy with the level of support provided to you?

Yes, we were very satisfied with the level of support. SQA provided clear guidance at each stage of the process, and the communication was transparent and efficient. Any queries we had were addressed promptly, which made the entire experience more manageable.

Did you find the timescales and expectations clear?

Yes, the timescales and expectations were well communicated, and we were able to plan accordingly. The SQA team was helpful in outlining the different phases of the approval process and what was required at each step.

How have you found being an SQA centre?

Being an SQA centre has been a rewarding experience. It has allowed us to offer internationally recognised qualifications that both employers and academic institutions highly value. This has enhanced our reputation and helped us attract students who are keen to pursue further education or enter the workforce with strong, recognised credentials.

Do you have any advice for other organisations going through the process?

My advice would be to ensure that you fully understand the expectations and requirements from the outset and to engage your entire team in the process. Clear communication and a strong commitment to quality are key. There are a lot of detailed documents to go through and gain a deep understanding of. It is not too difficult a task but time-consuming to understand the criteria, concepts, and Scottish education system, which may differ from your country. Working closely with SQA representatives and asking questions when needed will make the process smoother. It’s a rigorous journey, but the benefits of becoming an SQA centre are well worth the effort.
