SQA publishes 2024 National Qualifications course reports

Monday 23 September 2024

From today (Monday 23 September), SQA will start publishing its 2024 National Qualifications course reports.

The reports provide teachers and lecturers with a summary of how learners have performed in their exams and coursework for each subject at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher level over the past year.

Course reports – written by principal assessors and principal verifiers – are published with the intention of giving an insight of how learners performed detailing which areas of the course assessment where learners performed well, and which areas proved to be more demanding.

Principal assessors and other senior appointees are experienced teachers and lecturers who work with SQA to produce the course reports and highlight examples of where candidates have performed well in their external assessments.

The reports also contain advice for teachers, lecturers, and training practitioners on preparing learners for the coming year’s assessments, as well as statistical data relating to grade boundaries.

The first reports to be published today cover the following subjects at all available levels: Administration and IT, Applications of Mathematics, Dance, Economics, English, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Fashion and Textile Technology, Geography, Health and Food Technology, Latin, Mathematics, Mathematics of Mechanics, Media, Music, Photography, Physical Education, Practical Cake Craft, Practical Cookery, and Statistics.

Individual course reports can be found on the drop-down menus on specific subject level pages. All other reports will be available by the end of October. Schools and colleges will receive weekly updates with links to the latest available reports.

Donna Stewart, Interim Director of Qualifications Development at SQA, said: ‘National Qualification course reports provide teachers and lecturers with valuable insight on how learners performed over the past year. The reports focus on candidate performance in the full range of course assessments that was reintroduced for session 2023-24 and give teaching staff valuable feedback that will help them prepare for this year’s cohort for assessments in 2025.

Ms. Stewart adds: ‘We publish course reports every year, following the marking of exams and coursework. The reports are a valuable addition to the extensive resources and CPD materials SQA makes available to teachers and lecturers, and we encourage all practitioners to use the reports - and other available resources – which explain the national standards for assessment in each course and contain examples of good candidate performance.’
